Surgery day!
At 8am Spanish time I will be going for my major thoracic/spinal surgery.
Today I had a my anaesthesia appointment and was admitted to the ward, where I was welcomed by my favourite nurse from my last surgery!
I got settled in my bed, and watched my lecture online… my surgeon arrived to see me mid way through, and we went over the plan for tomorrow.
He wrote me up for my pain medications and IV fluid with glucose for overnight while I’m nil by mouth, to try and keep me stable & they’ll be giving me a continuous steroid infusion starting tomorrow.
I’m having a fusion of the right costovertebral joints. I’m first down at 8am and they’re unsure how long the surgery will take as it depends how many levels need fusing.
He’s going to test each rib on the right like a piano key, for instability and fuse all the levels that are needed… 4 minimum he thinks.
He’s hopeful that they won’t have to enter my pleura – the lung lining, as this will complicate surgery and need a chest drain into my lung as well as a surgical drain.
The surgery will be very painful but it’s needed as my quality of life is dire at the moment with me dislocating 4 ribs every-time I move my right arm or even breathe.
They’re using a special fusion system called “thorib” which is french and being flew in as this is a specialised operation.
It uses special metal clamps to clamp the ribs and bars to attach my unstable ribs to my spinal rod. One of my spinal rods needs replacing also, this is what Dr Gilete will be doing.
It’s a very painful surgery apparently but my lung capacity shouldn’t be restricted physically by the fusion as it’s at the back, and most of the movement for breathing comes from the chest at the front- so that’s good news!

I probably won’t be able to post for a while but Leann will update when she comes to visit me in ICU after uk surgery.
