£85K goal – (£25K from 2025 surgery and £60k from 2026 surgery)
Hi, it’s Mel here, I’m back in the room on the ward where they all know and look after me so well.
Wow! So the surgery was expected to finish at around 1pm but was much more complicated than expected and went on until 7pm!
They managed to stabilise the ribs but it was difficult due to all the spinal rods and screws I already have. They actually had to fully remove the dorsal section of a few ribs and attach clamps and rods to enable them to get the angles correct and they also had to enter my pleura- which is something they were trying to avoid.
This means I needed a chest drain in addition to the standard superficial wound drain.
I spent a night and day in ICU and unfortunately didn’t have a central line fitted, so they had to fit a midline (which took 5 attempts) and then I went back to theatre yesterday for a central line to be fitted.
This is needed as I’m on 2 continuous IV infusions (hydrocortisone and pain medications), in addition to IV fluids, and many other IV meds… my steroids and pain infusion need to run 24/7 so we need multiple access points and the normal cannulas just don’t last long on me at all… and are very difficult to place new ones!
So I have some beautiful bruises, but I’m just grateful we have enough access points now!
Then, I had my chest drain removed from my lung today so just have the superficial wound drain left, and I’ve just been for another chest X-ray- which looks good!
I’ll be getting some chest physio daily and I’m in a LOT of pain. It’s a very painful surgery so I’ve been unable to move and just laid flat on my back.
Thankfully my Doctors are AMAZING, they do such a good job at looking after me and you can tell without any doubt that they genuinely care about me. They’re trying their hardest to control my pain now and manage my other conditions… and things seem to be going in the right direction!
Thanks so much for all your support so far! Please keep sharing and donating, we still have a lot of money to raise to pay off all the money I’ve had to borrow!
I’m having to borrow a huge amount of money to fund this as I was deteriorating too badly to wait any longer- this means we need to keep the fundraising going until we reach the target and can pay off the money ASAP.

The plan for the weekend is just to try to rest and get the pain under control, and do some chest physio.
One day at a time… “step by step” as they keep reminding me ????
Love and hugs,
Mel x
