Itv update 18th July 2024

????Here’s a little video update from the lovely Amy Lea on tonight’s ITV Tyne Tees News.????

It highlights my story and recovery after spending 18month existing in a surgical halo, having life-threatening seizures, and my major lifesaving surgeries.

These were a worlds first to be undertaken in such a way on someone already fully fused posteriorly, and were performed in Barcelona by my fantastic neurosurgeon – Dr Gilete. ????

It’s a lovely little piece highlighting my progress in working towards my long term dream to become a primary teacher… ???? I’ve been volunteering for the last year, in year two at Kingston park primary- which is a wonderful school and I thoroughly enjoy every moment I spend there with the children! ????

I volunteered there whilst at uni, and again since, when I’ve been well enough… then for the last year I have supported the children on Fridays in library, changing their library books, listening to them read aloud and hosting story time (always a favourite!), along with general classroom support sometimes.✏️

Some of the children spoke to ITV about what they enjoy about me helping them at school and I’ll include a few bloopers here – as they were totally hilarious!!! ????

One said “Mel helps me to read the difficult words myself, and sound them out, she doesn’t tell me the answers, she helps me…. and I love that about her!” and that I apparently “pull funny faces; make her laugh, and make her happy”!

And finally one little girl said “what I like the most about Mel coming in to help us read……. is that she ONLY comes in on Fridays because we are VERY BUSY!”
From the mouths of babes! ????????

I’m hoping to continue my volunteering next year as well as moving into my own bungalow with my team of PAs, and to look to do my teacher training ASAP!

So thank you to everyone who supports me, none of this would be possible if it wasn’t for all of you, and your continued donations & support!

We still have a little way to go to pay off the debt from the surgeries so any fundraising support is still a huge help!

Thank you,
Mel x
